And he said to me,
stooped like an old piece of sugar cane
sucked dry by the hungry lips of
life beating in his soul man veins,
"Verbalize yaself"

He said to me,
with his lips paper dry and kissed at the edges
by the winter cold knocking at the door of
his soul man heart

He said -

He asked with the thousand
nights of thunder a rumblin' not so far off
in his distance

He asked with tumblin' and fumblin' clatter of
old soul man fingers plucking the strings of
my new bubblegum heart and asked of
my cheap blue shoes -

for me to "verbalize maself"

And I opened my fresh new mouth smelling of
the summer in the rain
And my eyes that glowed in the darkness of
the future
and in the bright right light of
soul
And my cheap blue shoes danced a little
to the beat I heard in the heart of
the soul man

And I said to him,
tall like the uncut grass
left by the careless and the damned
with life leaving in their veins
I said,
"Grace"

As inspired by the story of 'Amazing Grace' , the Christian hymn by John Newton. Like always, I reveal nothing! I would ask for you to, if you're interested look up the lyrics to 'Amazing Grace' and try and make the relation between the characters there, and the characters here. The characters here differ in their setting - the merge of Christianity and blues music during the 1950s, in the US being the domain of mine - but are predominantly the same.

This hym is one of my all time favourites!
I would guess that the speaker in the poem is the redeemed slave trader and the "soul man" is a black slave, or a black blues musician in the 1950s setting and possibly a personification of God and/or the grace that the speaker has found. But I'm not sure. I'm finding this really hard to work out!

Somehow reminds me of Martin Luther King as well, as he verbalised for the people he gave a united voice. Unique and unusual ideas of interpretation.

I am, as always, astounded by your insight 'Ulia!
The soul man is indeed meant to be a black blues musician, who epitomizes the generation who adopted 'Amazing Grace' as not just a hymn, but a song also.
The grace is both a young girl, who will grow to become a symbol of the new blues era, as well as the grace found in the worship of God, in-keeping with the hymn basis. I would say that blues music was at that time a form of worship, and the music a type of religion.

Same era isn't it? It is all intertwined, and it's for that reason that I like this poem. It represents many things, from blues to politics; some would say they're not really that different.

Thankyou! I'm glad I didn't say something completely random and unfit to be a comment on this amazing poem. Music is still, in my church at least, a way of worshiping God today and while I do not see music as a religion myself I think it is an incredibly powerful force and is capable of moving people in similar ways to the ways religion can.
I have read this poem again after you enlightened me as to what it's about and I feel that I can appreciate its brilliance even more. Again great, great work.

Well blues originated from racial slavery which is the great politics centre.

Have more faith in your comments Julia - you are far more perceptive than you may always give yourself credit for. ^ ^
And as always, I am deeply flattered by such comments on my humble work.
