And he said to me,
stooped like an old piece of sugar cane
sucked dry by the hungry lips of
life beating in his soul man veins,
"Verbalize yaself"
He said to me,
with his lips paper dry and kissed at the edges
by the winter cold knocking at the door of
his soul man heart
He said -
He asked with the thousand
nights of thunder a rumblin' not so far off
in his distance
He asked with tumblin' and fumblin' clatter of
old soul man fingers plucking the strings of
my new bubblegum heart and asked of
my cheap blue shoes -
for me to "verbalize maself"
And I opened my fresh new mouth smelling of
the summer in the rain
And my eyes that glowed in the darkness of
the future
and in the bright right light of
soul
And my cheap blue shoes danced a little
to the beat I heard in the heart of
the soul man
And I said to him,
tall like the uncut grass
left by the careless and the damned
with life leaving in their veins
I said,
"Grace"

I would guess that the speaker in the poem is the redeemed slave trader and the "soul man" is a black slave, or a black blues musician in the 1950s setting and possibly a personification of God and/or the grace that the speaker has found. But I'm not sure. I'm finding this really hard to work out!

The soul man is indeed meant to be a black blues musician, who epitomizes the generation who adopted 'Amazing Grace' as not just a hymn, but a song also.
The grace is both a young girl, who will grow to become a symbol of the new blues era, as well as the grace found in the worship of God, in-keeping with the hymn basis. I would say that blues music was at that time a form of worship, and the music a type of religion.

I have read this poem again after you enlightened me as to what it's about and I feel that I can appreciate its brilliance even more. Again great, great work.

And as always, I am deeply flattered by such comments on my humble work.
